You will even struggle against a newer master cycle student that happens to outweigh you by a bit. If your school does not allow rolling at the white belt level, you will be at a disadvantage (rolling) against someone who has done an equal amount at a BJJ school. Then you roll afterwards for however long. You learn some advanced technique, its variations, and drill them for 45 to 60 minutes. You may drill a little bit longer than your average school (but like everything, this is school dependent).
The master cycle after is pretty much exactly like other BJJ schools. Having those experienced upper colored belts (purple, brown, black) can be helpful in your training as they guide you through it. Most of CTC’s I’ve been at, there are a ton of white belts, and “combative belts,” but not many colored belts. They do a great job explaining anything, and stuff just “clicks” for me when they teach.Ĭons: The training at most CTC’s is not as intense and not competition orientated, and that can hinder your performance in competitions if that’s the route you’re going for. Pros: you can watch the videos online, it’s a structured curriculum, and honestly, Ryron and Rener are my favorite instructors for bjj. If I remember correctly, white belts are not allowed to freely spar until they have 2 stripes, I think? Which is unfortunate, because sparring is extremely important for skill progression. Blue belts from Gracie Certified Schools do not roll the same as “other” blue belts from different schools. Because of this, there can be a noticeable lack of skill. There are A LOT more hobbyists instead of competitors in CTCs. However, most of the students that go to Gracie Training Centers are not trying to compete on a regular basis. Now, this doesn’t apply to ALL schools, but that’s been my experience. Most other bjj schools do not have that type of structure, and often times techniques will be taught at random, unfortunately. Now, The master cycle is awesome because it’s a structured curriculum.
